John’s Gospel and Its Sources (Johannine Studies 5; Brill)

We are looking to complete the fifth volume of the Johannine Studies series, published with Brill (as part of the new De Gruyter Brill), entitled John’s Gospel and Its Sources (co-edited by Stanley E. Porter and David I. Yoon), but we are wanting to include a few additional essays. The theme is broad, including any topic dealing with John’s Gospel and its sources.

The previous volume was published last year, in 2024, on The Johannine Prologue and Its Resonances, and it contained a great variety of essays on John’s prologue. We anticipate producing yet another volume that contributes to our understanding of John’s Gospel and any potential sources involved in its writing.

Those who are interested in submitting an essay to the current volume may contact Stanley Porter (princpl@mcmaster.ca) and submit both a Word doc and pdf of the paper. We are finalizing the volume this fall, so a final due date of November 1, 2025 is set for this volume. As stated in the Preface of the volumes,

The topics of the volumes are defined and interpreted broadly, so that papers that deal, for example, with clearly related subjects (and especially those that encompass the breadth of the Johannine corpus), we hope will be able to find a home in these collections of papers . . . Those who have not already published in the series should not hesitate to propose papers for any of the next volumes . . . Please send the Word file and pdf along with an abstract (no more than one-hundred words).

Those interested in future volumes may take note of the projected titles:

  • John and Judaism
  • John and the Synoptic Gospels
  • John and the “Fourth” Gospel
  • Johannine Language (including Genre and Style)
  • Johannine Community and Audience

Papers should be around 8–10,000 words total, including footnotes and bibliography. We look forward to reading more on John’s Gospel and Its Sources.
